Minnesota Duluth Takes Conference Lead

Minnesota Duluth Takes Conference Lead

Last Friday night Minnesota Duluth faced off against Alabama Huntsville. It was the Bulldog’s first home game in 63 days.  When they arrived back at Amsoil Arena, it was roaring with over 6,500 fans to support them. This was also the first time the two teams have ever played one another, so it was bound to be an exciting battle.

Within the first five minutes, the Bulldogs had already begun to dominate the rink. They had the first 8 shots on goal, but nothing seemed to be getting past Huntsville’s impressive goalie, Clark Saunders. After almost 9 minutes into the first period, UMD’s Justin Crandall finally slipped in a goal to the right side of the net. Into the second period, the puck was flying but never found the net. Seven minutes into the second period, senior Travis Oleksuk finally filled the net earning his 15th goal of the season making it a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Into the third period, Huntsville finally picked up their skates, and defenseman Tom Durnie scored during a power play. While the match up was close, Minnesota finished with the win. The win against Alabama Huntsville capped an eight game winning streak for the Bulldogs and this win keeps them at the top of the charts in division-one college hockey.

They are number one in the National rankings but their spot will be put to the test this weekend when they take on Michigan Tech University in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. Watch the ice heat up; it’s going to be a great game to watch as both teams are having excellent seasons.
